Barbecue sauce can be a delicious, savory addition to whole foods prepped on the grill this summer— but most store-bought versions are loaded with ultra-refined ingredients that disrupt your body’s natural ability to heal, repair, thrive, and be metabolically healthy! Making this homemade version is really easy and is made with clean, simple pantry staples and comes together in just a few minutes. It’s tangy, flavorful, and nourishing — a summertime favorite inspired by a Love & Lemons recipe I've lovingly modified. Enjoy every saucy bite!
Ingredients:
1½ cup ketchup (Unsweetened)
½ cup apple cider vinegar
½ cup water
¼ cup brown sugar (or pure maple syrup)
¼ cup tamari (or soy sauce or coconut aminos)
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika (or chili powder)
Instructions:
In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, vinegar, water, brown sugar, tamari, mustard, garlic powder, cumin, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring often, for 20 minutes, or until thickened. Season to taste and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
